Using Scaler 3.1 with Ableton Live 11 – Live Sync

Hey everyone!

I’m using Scaler 3.1 with Ableton Live 11.3.42, and I’m really enjoying the new Live Sync feature. However, I’m running into a bit of a problem and could use some help.

Here’s my setup:

  • I have one Scaler instance set as the Master with my chord progression.
  • Then I add additional Scaler instances on other MIDI tracks to follow that Master.
  • I route each Follower Scaler to its own VST instrument.

The issue is: The Follower always plays the full chords from the Master, regardless of the performance/motion I set on the Follower. Muting the Main Track Chords (Lead or Following) does not seem to do anything. This makes the playback feel off – like it’s triggering the chord notes first and then applying the motion, which messes with the groove and dynamics.

Am I missing a setting? Is there a better way to set this up so that the Followers can still follow the chord structure but apply their own motion/performance correctly?

I’d love to make Scaler a core part of my production workflow, so any help is really appreciated!

Thanks! :folded_hands:

Hi @VHS welcome to the forum. Note that muting a track in Scaler 3 e.g. Follower main track will not mute the MIDI output of that track, just the audio. To prevent a track from outputting MIDI, click the three dot menu next to the track name on the Arrange page, and select ‘None’ as the MIDI channel. This is very important in Ableton Live as internal MIDI routings in Live are all combined into one channel.

You can find more information about MIDI routing on the MIDI routing DAW guide in the Documents and Resources page: Scaler Music - Documents & Resources - #2

Hi @Tristan, thank you so much for the warm welcome and for the super helpful explanation!

That totally cleared things up. Switching the MIDI channel to ‘None’ fixed the issue right away.

I’ll definitely check out the MIDI routing guide you mentioned to get a better handle on things.

Thanks again!
