It’s kind of hard to explain this in writing, so I made a quick video showing the issue. Basically, I have a MIDI file playing only white notes on my track and I’m trying to use the “chord notes” keys lock option to force it to follow the chord progression in Scaler 3.
The issue is that the MIDI file remains stuck on the previous chord for a short time instead of updating instantly like in Scaler 2. Weirdly enough, this wasn’t a problem when I first installed Scaler 3, and uninstalling/reinstalling causes it to work properly for a short time. It also works perfectly if I turn off DAW sync and manually start the playhead in Scaler 3.
I’ve tried a ton of different combinations in the options, but none of them made a difference. I’ve also tried installing it both with and without the included instruments, and I’ve never let it scan my plugins (I’ve also heard from someone using Studio One who did scan his plugins that it’s a problem for him, too, just to rule that out as a potential cause).
The video starts with DAW sync on, then I turn it off and start the Scaler 3 playhead manually to show that the timing works normally that way, and then DAW sync is turned back on.
If it helps at all (and also because the instrument choice in the first video isn’t great at highlighting the issue since it’s particularly troublesome when it comes to bass notes), here’s a comparison between DAW-synced instances of Scaler 2 and Scaler 3 mapping incoming MIDI to the same chord progression.
It’s worth mentioning that the Scaler 2 version is more complicated and sounds different because only a small portion of the keyboard is adjusted in 2’s Chord Notes mode, so I have the MIDI of a few higher and lower octaves being sent to different MIDI channels and individually shifted back into range (with any notes further out of range being culled) prior to hitting Scaler 2. As you can imagine, it’s an inelegant solution with plenty of issues. The timing works perfectly, though.
Scaler 3’s extended Chord Notes range and arrange mode will be huge boons once the timing issue gets ironed out. Right now, though, I can’t really use it because it doesn’t switch to the new chord instantly like in Scaler 2. I’m using the latest 3.0.1 version. Both Scalers are using dynamic voicing because the Scaler 2 chain benefits from it after everything gets cramped together, but 3’s timing issue strikes even if it’s turned off.
