UX Feedback, Note-Offs in Preview and Motion Browser Workflow (Arrange Page)

System & Environment:

  • DAW: Cubase 15 Pro (Version 15.0.30)

  • Scaler Version: 3.2.2 (Build 96c952d)

Description: I want to provide some feedback regarding the auditioning workflow on the new Arrange Page. Currently, trying to find and preview the right Motion/Pattern is incredibly tedious and disrupts the creative process due to a mix of UI limitations and a playback bug.

Issue 1: Missing Note-Off Events during Preview (Bug) When clicking and holding a pattern in the Motion Browser to preview it, the audio playback seems to swallow “note-off” events. While this is somewhat manageable with percussive sounds or E-Pianos, it turns into an absolute chaotic cluster of overlapping notes when using sustained instruments like strings. It makes it impossible to musically evaluate a phrase before importing it.

Issue 2: The Browser is a “One-Way Street” (UX) If I navigate up to five subfolders deep into the Motion Browser, preview a pattern, and realize it doesn’t fit, there is no quick way to go back or swap it. I have to delete the track entirely, create a new one, remember the exact path, click through all the subfolders again, and select another pattern. This is highly inefficient.

Issue 3: The Perform Menu Overlay blocks Drag & Drop (UX) Trying to bypass the browser by using the Perform Menu on the Main Track (to preview patterns in sync with the DAW loop) reveals another limitation. The Perform Menu acts as a rigid, full-screen overlay. Because it covers the Arrange tracks entirely, I cannot drag and drop a chosen pattern from the Perform menu directly onto a clip in the Arrange row beneath it.

Conclusion/Feature Request: Please fix the missing note-off bug during the long-click preview. Furthermore, the Arrange Page urgently needs a more flexible browser system—either a “Back/Swap” button to quickly cycle through patterns within a folder, or the ability to preview patterns in sync without leaving the Arrange view.

Thank you for your hard work! Stefan

Hi @st.meier Thanks for the feedback. Here’s some thoughts to your points.

  1. We can see hear that Motions preview within the browser has a longer sustain than when selected. As you say in a majority of cases it doesn’t cause issues for us or our users (I think you are the first one to report it) but it’s related to another issue we have on our list. Note Off is being received as expected.
  2. Are you aware that once you have selected a motion you can just change it in the Sidebar with the < and > (see attached). Also you can just click the name and it takes you right back to the breadcrumbed position in the motion.
  3. Yes, that is not how Scaler 3 works. You can select or preview the Motions from the Browser but not drag and drop.

Please do let us know if this helps or if I have misunderstood you! Thanks for the good vibes.

Hi Davide,

Thank you for the quick and detailed response!

Good to know that the long sustain behavior during preview is already on your radar and connected to a known issue. I appreciate the tip regarding the sidebar arrows and the breadcrumb click—that actually helps streamline the navigation process considerably! Completely understood regarding the drag-and-drop limitation on the Arrange page; knowing this is by design, I can easily adapt my workflow and route the MIDI directly into Cubase.

By the way, because I rely on Scaler so heavily as the harmonic engine within my daily production environment alongside Cubase 15 Pro and Dorico, I recently submitted an official ticket via Plugin Boutique applying to join your beta testing team. I would be absolutely thrilled to contribute more in-depth workflow feedback, help stress-test future builds, and assist in refining this fantastic tool for professional applications.

Thanks again for taking the time to clarify these points, and keep up the great work!

Best regards, Stefan
