I reported this issue to support who told me to post it here.
Here is the thread:
Me:
SCALER is forcing the “Inter” font to some Eastern European version. Since most themes in Reaper don’t use the “Inter” font the problem does not show up. The 80Gray themes use the “Inter” font so that is where I discovered the bug. If I take any Reaper theme and change a font to “Inter” the bug appears. So it is a Scaler problem, not a Reaper problem.

Hi Robert. Sorry to say we are unable to reproduce this error on Mac or Windows 11 using Scaler 3 with Reaper 7, using the 80Gray Reaper themes Whilst looking for this Reaper theme we found a forum post which we assume is from you, so we see there issue you are talking about in your attached screenshot there.
It does seem very strange, would you mind answering the following questions so we can try to figure out where the problem is occurring.
What language is your operating system set to?
Does the text look like it does in your screenshot with a completely empty Reaper project? Or is it only after you add a Scaler 3 plugin to your project that the text appears like this?
Me
First, yes that is my post and screenshot.
Second… the language is set to English Canada. I have installed English US and UK but no non English languages.
The problem occurs only after I add the Scaler plugin and only with the “Inter” set of fonts. If I change the font to anything else the text appears correct. If I change themes as long as the Inter fonts are not used the text is correct.
One question I have for you.. Look at the “theme tweaker” when you are using the 80Gray theme, and go to the “Walter” section. What fonts are set for the Walter 1 and 2? If it is anything other then Inter, then It is possible that 8Gray wants to use a font that I don’t have installed and it is defaulting to the Inter font.
Hi @DocBobB welcome to the forum. This is a very odd fault but not one we’ve been able to replicate using the exact theme you mentioned in Reaper 7 on Windows 11. It would be interesting to get the thoughts of some other Scaler / Reaper users.
@Miki is this something you have encountered in Reaper? Where text turns to gibberish on account of the selected theme? We’re trying to determine if Scaler 3 is somehow the cause of this or not.
I have never seen this theme, so I did not see this kind of problem. I suppose this is theme-related. First, I need to find it somewhere. If this is a theme made by a user and found on the Cockos site, this has nothing to do with Scaler. I’ll check later, after the work.
@Tristan
This is even not Reaper theme done by Cockos. There is also a note “This theme includes a custom theme adjuster script. Please use the provided adjuster script instead of Reaper’s default theme adjuster to avoid any bugs.” So, no, I will not test it on my system. I tested many themes so far and have never had any kind of problem with Scaler 3. This is not Scaler 3 problem for sure.
You are correct, it is not the default Reaper theme, but there are literally hundreds of 3rd party Reaper themes.
Let me describe the issue simply. ANY theme that uses the “Inter” font has this bug. If I change a font in the DEFAULT Reaper theme to “Inter” the problem occurs. So SCALER is forcing the any instance of the “Inter” font to a non-English version. Since this happens with this font any any Reaper theme the problem is Scaler’s. NO other plugin or vst instrument does this.
Thanks @Miki. I have tested Scaler 3 with this specific theme on Windows and did not have any font issues. @DocBobB given I am using the specific theme you mention in Reaper on Windows with Scaler 3 and do not see any font issues, this suggests to me that there is something specific on your machine causing the issue. Perhaps you do not have a particular font installed?
I’m afraid I have no idea how to tweak themes and adjust fonts in Reaper. So if you do believe this an issue with Scaler and not specific to your machine, we can certain lodge this as an issue to investigate in the future, however I’m afraid it isn’t something we’re able to prioritise right now. But thank you for your feedback and insights here.
I tried several new themes but they did not use Inter font. It was not specifically mentioned, I checked and it was not installed on my PC. I don’t know which other theme uses this font and, as mentioned, I did not want to installe scripts.
There was one theme with FiraSans-Bold, FiraSans-Regular and Roboto-Bold fonts that I had to add, but I had no problem with displaying characters. As I previously mentioned, this problem cannot be related to Scaler 3.
