Scaler 3 AND Logic Pro Issues

Starting a new thread here. I assume many issues on Logic Pro or also showing up in other DAWs. Still, after rereading the manual I noticed that Logic Pro is mentioned only in passing and in a way that provides little clarity. Also, the idea that we should refer to our DAW user manual is a bit disingenuous (Logic manual is 1300 pages!). It wouldn’t be a bad idea to create a page here or on the Scaler website with the specific issues related to each of the major DAW applications.

I, for one, am experiencing many of the same frustrations others are expressing here. For me, the thing just won’t load. Which flavor am I having trouble with? All, none, some. I don’t know. Sometimes it loads (one in ten). I’ve rebooted my Mac today more time than in the last year. It’s not clear in the manual (at least for me) which Scaler flavor works in Logic Pro. Anybody know the answer to that one?

I get when to use the audio flavor (audio files, right?). But, the control flavor seems to defeat the big ambitions of Scaler 3 by leaving you with the instrument chosen in the DAW. The idea of sampling different sounds in an interactive way seems to have been thrown out the window.

I hope others can chime in with their own Scaler AND Logic Pro issues and we can support each other while this sorts out (hopefully) over time.

I must say that the team bringing this to market seems sincere in wanting this to be useful in all the ways they hope it to be. But, in creating an extended hard sell they need to reflect a bit and consider if in making this a marketing success they did disservice to the community that they serve and that supports them. It’s been a mess from those of us having activation issues and others with DAWs that have turned into crash dummies and people like me can’t even get started using this to aid our music making ambitions. I think we all deserve an apology for their grand over-the-top over-sell. Just a tad of restraint would have gone a long way in tempering our expectations that Scaler 3 would be ready for prime time.

I use it with Logic.

It depends on where you load up the instance of Scaler as to which version you get. You have a choice whether to load the control version as a MIDI FX or as an instrument with the AU version (I don’t know that you can specifically ask for the VST version with Logic but you can with other DAWS) You can also load up the control version and have it control one or more instrument versions with the virtual midi controller. I do miss the the labeling of the control version that was in Scaler 2. I forget and try to change the instrument and don’t realize that it doesn’t work on the control version. The control version doesn’t have an instrument of it’s own.

The whole control version thing has been long available in Logic and the ability to host other VSTs inside it are really targeted at the other DAWs that don’t have that functionality. Same with the internal midi routing in Scaler.

For myself, I don’t know how much I will use the nesting of the different VSTs within Scaler 3. Not because it isn’t a nice, clean solution but because I prefer to send them to other tracks where I can adjust the output and work with the midi output directly. I will use the VST version with MuseScore but at present, it isn’t working properly there. I can still do most of the same things with Scaler 2 until that gets resolved/

Hey David. not sure if I am understanding you correctly but I use one instance of Scaler 3 to drive multiple channels in Logic using internal midi in in Logic 11.

Yes, I use it that way at times. but I prefer just to use the Scaler Control as a midi effect. Then I will direct the output to a dedicated track for the output rather than having it all internal to Scaler. That makes where I can modify the output and it is easier to add a separate transition to an outro or cadence for example rather than just cutting off the pattern abruptly.

With Scaler 2, I would have one instance of Scaler and then, one by one, redirect the output to separate tracks and populate them with just the midi output. Since I am not playing anything live, it just takes a couple minutes extra rather than messing with all the syncing between instances.

OK cool, so please can you clarify. Why can’t you do that in Scaler 3? I just did a score for a major project and used Scaler 3 only as a MIDI FX like you mention and it was great. Sorry to be ignorant, what am I missing?

Have you rebooted? I honestly don’t understand your point. I am not being antagonistic but genuinely, I use Scaler 3 like you do too and you are wondering how to use Scaler Audio? I use Scaler Audio. MIDI FX and instrument exactly the same way I use Scaler 2 - as do most of the artists in our network and team.

Sorry if I was unclear. I was really just explaining the different types of Scaler 3 instruments to the OP.

I don’t have any problems with Scaler 3 in Logic. The only problem I have with is with it in MuseScore. As far as the Scaler 3 Audio, I have not figured out what it does yet.

Oh all good phew. Scaler Audio is to be used as an FX on and Audio FX channel to detect audio. That’s all. Have you posted something specific in the Support thread re MuseScore? Our devs are watching there

Yes, thank you. I don’t expect it to be at the top of the priority list. I would be surprised if it made it into the first update as it is an unusual use case. But no biggie. I have Scaler2 to use in MuseScore until the gears turn that way.

Props for a pretty clean update to Scaler 3. I found the upgrade to be painless. I had a couple crashes which stopped once I rebooted. Everything else seems to be smooth. I an still exploring all the new toys.

The only quibble I would have is I miss the label showing which type of Scaler instance in the UI so I don’t reach to change the instrument and not have any effect..

I’ve put it in our DEV list. Makes sense thanks for sharing.

Hi - I run Logic Pro and have had zero problems with it not loading as I have helped Beta test it over recent weeks.

Perhaps I can try to help you get things working? Can you provide details of what your system is? What versions of MacOS and Logic might be helpful.

Just to clarify, and make sure we are on the same page, there are three versions of Scaler:

  1. Scaler 3 Control is a midi fx and can be used where you want to send the output of various scaler tracks to external midi devices (or route them to other midi tracks in Logic).
  2. Scaler 3 is an instrument (which is probably the main one most people would get started with - and is the one used in the pre-release and tutorial videos).
  3. Scaler 3 Audio is an audio fx and generally used where you might want to analyse the harmonic structure of an audio track.

Are you able to load Scaler 3 as an instrument in Logic?

Hello, to stay on the subject of using Scaler3 in Logic, I would like to share a strange thing with Strumming. In midiFX use, on a simple piano, the notes are cut, like a noteoff, something that does not occur in the standalone version and internal sounds, nor in the audioUnit version and internal sound on a track in Logic. This also does not happen with Scaler2 in midiFX. Waiting for a solution, have a good day

zzrwood, thanks for the offer of help.

First off, I can open the Scaler 3 app on my Mac and it seems to work as advertised.

Now I did three experiments this morning trying to isolate what is allowing you to run the plugin in Logic and me not.

First I opened a new project. Pulled in an MP3 file for detection. On that single track I clicked on Audio FX and loaded the Scaler Audio plug intending to use the detect function. It loaded without a problem but when I tried to open the plugin in Logic all I got was the spinning spinning gray beachball.

Second experiment: I created a new project in logic created with a midi track. I clicked on instrument slot and loaded Scaler 3 plugin there.Again when I try to open it all I get is beachball.

Third experiment: I created a new project in logic created with a midi track. This time I loaded a logic piano and loaded Scaler Control in the midi effects slot. (Not my first choice, but I wanted to see if the plugin loaded). Beachball again. Always beachballs.

I went into my plugins manager and all three of the. plugins have check marks indicating that they passed inspection.

Still, since yours works in logic and mine doesn’t I’m going to assume that I have something set up wrong in logic but I have no idea what that can be.

Thanks in advance for any help.I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Some details left out:
Mac M1 32GB memory
Sequoia 15.4 release candidate (could it be this beta? All my other apps have not hiccuped)

It’s been a couple of days since my posts above and my seeking assistance described above.

Everybody must be busy making music. I get it. So, is there another way for me to get help for Scaler 3 to function in Logic Pro?

Thx, -steve

Hi @ssssavage
Just checking, are you opening a vanilla session of Logic (not a template) and loading a fresh instance of Scaler 3?

Please install and download Scaler 3.0.1

Please delete Scaler 3 Settings File and restart Scaler 3:

  • Mac → /Users/[NAME]/Library/Application Support/Scaler 3.settings
  • PC → C:\Users[NAME]\AppData\Roaming\Scaler 3.settings

Always loading vanilla session and fresh instance of scaler 3. (After computer reboot)

Purchased app at plugin boutique and they don’t have 3.01 available. I don’t know how to download it on your site.

It is the same link to download the installer. If you see the link, it now says 3.0.1.

About strumming duration, something better in standalone app : sound release is ok, but not in MidiFX AU version in Logic (not yet tested VST/VST3 in Live) v3.0.1

Followed directions to the T (whatever that means??). I deleted the settings file in my application support folder of my Mac.

Download 3.01 and installed it.

Rebooted Mac and went through the three flavors of Scaler described in my post of Mar 26 with Scaler loading but only getting a spinning icon with plugin not opening.

I have no. problems with my Mac M1 and/or Logic Pro 11. Scaler 3 plugins

Thanks for staying on this. Thx, -steve
