Playing notes using arangement

Hey. Scaler 3 seems like it has a ton of potential, but I’m kinda having trouble using it how I want to. So, I have a full song arranged, in terms of all the chords and everything. I’m using it in my DAW, fwiw. And I have a bunch of other midi stuff going on that I’ve added in the DAW, like a bass line and things like that. I wanna use scaler 3 to add some more melodic elements to parts of the song, but I don’t wanna use the premade phrases and things. I wanna just use the key locking and play something in, but I can’t figure out how to do it. I don’t want it to mess up playing the chords that it’s already playing, and I wanna be able to record what I play, either in Scaler or in the DAW so I can review it or do takes.

In Scaler 2, since there were multiple instances, I would make a new instance and do the thing, but I can’t figure out how to do that here. I’m probably just dumb, but if anyone can help me figure it out, I’d really appreciate it.

It works almost the same way as in Scaler 2.

What I do:

  1. I create a track in DAW with first instance of Scaler 3 and add all I need:
  • chords
  • tracks on the Arrange page + instruments

Right click on the Play button in Scaler 3 and be sure that DAW sync option is checked:

Also be sure that the Loop is selected (1) and that it is activated (2).

  1. I copy this track including Scaler 3 (how you do it probably depends on the DAW) with all the elements. I call this “the second instance”.
This way, the second instance has everything identical to the first (main) one.

  2. I Purge all on the Browse page (first page) of the second instance, EXCEPT the scale which you should leave intact.

On the Browse page of this instance you should see Current Scale (1); select keys Lock: Scale White Keys, or whathever option you need(2) .

  1. Add the instrument to play on the DAW track, as you usually do.

  2. Arm tthis track. Mute so called Main Track on the second instance:

  3. As both instances are DAW synced, when you press Play in your DAW, the music starts and you hear the sound from the first instance, but you can play on your controller on the second instance.

  4. Enjoy

Thanks for replying! I will try this. It isn’t a great workflow, so maybe something for the devs to look at in the future I guess? Anyway, it at least gets me unstuck. Thanks!!

If I remember well, the sync between instances will be fixed in one of the incoming releases.

So, I finally had a chance to try this, and the only problem is it’s still playing the chords in the second instance along with my melody. So even if I solo the second Scaler instance, the melody is still getting lost in the chords. I thought there was a way to turn off the chords, but I can’t find it. Muting the Main Track doesn’t do anything for me.

I figured it out. I didn’t really get that I had to erase all my chords from the arrange page and just go with the scale notes. I’m unblocked now, but I what I still really want is the ability to make a layer in the Scaler arranger that instead of having one of their preset patterns is just, “play whatever you want and we’ll follow the chords that are playing or the scale or whatever you pick.” The current solution feels like a workaround.
