Enabling two different performances/instances

Hi all, I am trying to have scaler 3 playing two different types of performances in my daw (ableton). I loaded two instances on two separate tracks but one of them won’t play any sound. I wanted to use an internal sound so I need scaler to handle both performances and instruments.

Also I believe they should just stop adding features and focus on making things easier. I’m quite sure the pain I experience every time I use scaler is partly due to the amount of stuff that gets in the way plus the total lack of feedback and assistance from the UI.

Thanks

Hi @Vindindin welcome to the forum. I can’t think of any reason why your second instance of Scaler 3 in Ableton Live would not be making any sound. Perhaps if you are able to share a video or even screenshots of your Ableton Live project I could try to figure out what is going wrong.

When you say:

Do you need two seperate instances of Scaler? If they are both playing the same chord progression you could create additional instrument tracks within a single instance of Scaler 3.

MIDI newbie here (Reaper DAW). If your doing a live record I can’t help. But if doing MIDI tracks it was quite easy to drag & drop the 2 different ‘Scaler 3’ midi files into separate tracks within the same project and it worked with no iisue. I presume you looked into your track/DAW settings.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I need a different track because when I select a specific performance, the track will only play chords accordingly. Or is there any other official way to put together a piece with multiple performance “samples”? For instance when I use Ujam, you can drag the style onto the track and it will play the midi notes, instead of getting stuck on a specific play mode. I’m not home now but will post the video as I have the chance.

Please see the behaviour in action here.

I tried to switch leader/follower roles but nothing changes. The one playing is the first one I created. When I add the scaler plugin on another midi track, it just won’t play.

Hi @Vindindin thanks for sending the video. A few things to try. Given you are sending Scaler 3 MIDI notes from Ableton Live, rather than playing Scaler’3 internal sequencer, make sure you have DAW sync disabled in Scaler 3 by right clicking the play button at the top and disabling DAW sync.

You may also like to try disabling the global motion on the Scaler instance which is not producing any sound to make sure that is not causing the issue. Also try selecting a different sound if the issue persists.

Hi Tristan, I tried disabling daw sync but nothing happened.
Now just to clarify, I got those midi notes by dragging the scaler main track chords into the ableton track where scaler also is. Is there any other way to record a performance with an inbuilt instrument in scaler? I mean record, not just playing. How would you add it to any piece of music you are working on? And from then on, how would you add to different pieces in different performance styles? I don’t think I’m looking for anything strange here.
Ps: I’m not sure what global motion is, couldn’t find any reference with the official support materials.

Hi @Vindindin global motion is just the motion on the main track. I have a feeling disabling this will resolve your issue as there was a bug discovered recently where strummed sequence motions were not responding to MIDI input. This will be resolved in a coming update:

There may be a simpler way to achieve what you are trying to do with just one instance of Scaler and without dragging MIDI to your DAW, so be sure to watch the two getting started tutorial videos on the Scaler Music YouTube page if you have not already: https://youtu.be/8N9bEaK25WA?si=tIwRMUUT34kyTfGk
