Please add a root bass [Implemented in Scaler 3.1.2]

Please add a root bass. Can you add the simplest root bass option on the motions page? No rhythm changes are needed; it should just follow the lowest note of the chords. For example, if the chord progression is F-C/E-Am, then the BASS would be F-E-A, a single line, with the duration following the chords. The purpose is to quickly drive some VST content.

@swingmix this sounds very much like the existing Bass Follow track introduced in Scaler 3.1. Is that different to what you are suggesting?

Excuse me, where is Bass Follow? Is there a video introduction?

I just found the “BASS Follow” you mentioned. This is what I meant. But there are two issues.

First: I hope this BASS Follow appears on the motions page.

Second: I noticed a problem with chord follow. Look, my first chord is C/E, the lowest note should be E, but it’s C. Actually, this is an old issue. It also happened in Scaler 2. Back then, the problem was in voice grouping.

As a user, I can solve these issues myself. But because I am an old user of SCALER, I hope SCALER can be more user-friendly, so I’m sharing these detailed feelings here.

Hi @swingmix, apologies I’m very confused here.

I’m not sure what you mean here. The Bass Follow track is an articulation motion accessed by adding a new track on the Arrange page, or as a global/main track motion using the motion menu above the instrument panel.

Note that Chord Follow and Bass Follow are different motion types. Your image beneath is of a Bass Follow track, so presumably you are talking about Bass Follow, not Chord Follow.

In my experience, Bass Follow tracks do follow chord inversions and play the note E over a C/E chord. Bass Follow tracks also have an invert modifier, so you can use the scissor tool to split the Bass Follow clip and invert particular notes if you’d like.

In your screenshot however, the Bass Follow clip has been detached meaning you have manually moved a note so the modifiers are not available to you in the side panel. Not that you should have needed to move a note anyway, as the Bass Follow track should have played a E over your C/E chord by default.

You can find more info about Bass Follow tracks in the 3.1 introduction video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/aFwAWbGhiX0?si=-KPeDh9CAWqPY3Y3

Okay. Thank you for your reply. Very thorough. It solved a lot of my confusion.

If convenient, please add the options ‘chord follow’ and ‘bass follow’ here. I didn’t find them here.

There is no CHORD FOLLOW and BASS FOLLOW here on the first page of SCALER 3.

@swingmix you may need to update to the latest version. Bass Follow was added to this menu in v3.1.2. Chord Follow wouldn’t make sense there, as that would be duplicating what the main track does without any motion. It would be following itself.

thank you!!!

On a related note I think that the Articulations and Expressions tabs could be merged into one. The difference between the two is not at all clear cut and I often end up looking in the wrong one even though I have been in both of them many times. In particular Passages really should be a subset of Performances. I know Passages were added later but that doesn’t mean they should get a place of their own in the “menu tree”.

There are lots of very interchangeable words in the Motions section: Passages, Phrases, Articulations, Motions, Passages, Performances, Phrases, Sequences. The differences between these things are not at all clear.
