Does Scaler 3 let you set the key of the scale you're searching for?

I have Scaler 2 and my main use for it is identifying odd scales I come up with for a main part in a song, then exploring the chords it comes up with based on that scale and key. The thing that is somewhat annoying in Scaler 2 is although I may not know the scale I’m using, I always know the key. With Scaler 2 it just spits out a couple dozen possible scales in any key, with no way to specify the key or sort by key, so you search through dozens of scales looking for the key the phrase is in.

I’m really hoping that this isn’t the case in Scaler 3, my main reason for Scaler is identifying weird scales I come up with, and I always have to include all possible scales meaning the list gets big, but not being able to specify key or at the least sort by key, slows this all down. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi @machinesworking

Welcome to the forum. Just to clarify when you say

do you mean that you know the tonic and the key signature, or are you using the detect function to find the scale?

In Scaler 2 if you know the tonic you can select it from the MAIN page by clicking on the SCALES button

You can now select the tonic from the drop down menu

to show all the scales for that tonic

If you click on teh ALL TYPES button

you will get a drop down of the scales sorted by type from which you can select your scale.

However, if you are using the detect function to find the scale of a part of a song this will not work. Scaler will show all the possible scales that will fit the song starting with the closest fit. At present this list cannot be filtered.

Hope this helps explain what is happening.

I get whats happening, I know the tonic of the scale, so when I hit detect I’m trying to find scales that match without having to search through the scales for the F tonic scales for example. Opening Scaler 2 right now and adding in the three chord start of a song spits out over 100 scales, and as it’s all going to be partial matches it takes much longer scrolling through all the scales to find the ones with the F tonic. So again, this is what I was asking, because to me this is the main reason I use Scaler at all, and it wouldn’t help me to upgrade if Scaler 3 also cannot sort the lists by tonic, just a similarity search.

Het @machinesworking Have you seen this?

Hi Davide, it almost looks like he was able to choose the tonic, but he’s certainly not commenting on it, one note is darker as if it’s the tonic note and he only chooses three notes. I’m getting the impression it’s going to be a wait and see thing? I find this an interesting miss on the part of Scaler, I don’t think I’m alone in that I have basic theory, but nothing deep, write in odd scales that I then need to define to maybe push in a direction etc, and almost always know the root note of the scale, just not the name and chords of a scale.

OK I went ahead and submitted a support ticket, I would be pretty disappointed in the beta testers if this wasn’t discussed as 3 gets VST hosting etc.

You can choose the tonic and filter by it and even add notes to see which scales contain. Is this what you mean?

Yes, more or less, I would like to play in, add or drop a MIDI file in, with a scale that I do not know the mode of but I’m aware of what the tonic is. To me this is the major reason I even use Sclaler, to get chords for a scale I’m trying to define. In version 2 the list can be a PITA to navigate if you know the tonic, it’s not any better than online scale finders.

So it looks like you can at least add in notes and get it to recognize the tonic in Scaler 3, this makes any upgrade price worth it to me, thanks.
