I’m still learning my way around, so if I’ve overlooked something, please let me know.
Otherwise, I keep finding that the scale list is extremely long—which is fine, except the scales listed seem to be in a random order, and there seems to be no way to sort or filter the list. So, if I want to find, for example, scales with F as the root, I have to scroll through (ostensibly) hundreds of randomly ordered scales to find them.
I expected to be able to at least click on a header (i.e., Scale, Note Match, Chord Match, Mode, Mood) to sort those alphabetically, allowing us to more quickly find what we need.
Similarly, there should be a search field, in which I could simply type (in my earlier example) “F”—which would then show me only the scales containing that letter. Or I could type “Melancholic” to find only the sales whose mood matches that word.
Again, if I’m missing something, please tell me. Otherwise, managing the extremely long list of scales seems unwieldy and frankly unusable in its current state.
I did perform several searches before posting. For example, I searched for “sort scale list” and “filter scale list,” and there were no matching results. I’m sorry that it offends you that I did not search for the specific word “all.”
I’m also watching the official Scaler 3 tutorials—in order. I’m on video #1 (Scaler 3 – Getting Started Part 1), and while the presenter shows and discusses the scale list, he does not show how to filter or sort the scales (at least not at that point in the video).
I’m not going to watch all of the videos and then return to ask a question about video #1. I’m working my way through the tutorials in sequence, and I have this question now. So, I stopped the video, came to the forum, searched for “sort” and “filter,” found nothing, and then posted my question. It’s not a crime if the answer is worded differently than the searches that the user tried, before posting.
I even added the caveat, “If I’ve overlooked something, please let me know.”
Just because someone posts a question that may be answered somewhere, that does not mean he or she didn’t search or isn’t watching the tutorials. I literally did both (that is, I’m working my way through the tutorials in sequence). Please try to keep this in mind when offering assistance to users in the future.
No one is talking offence and no need reiterate your point. I understood and clarified that the info you need is in the manual and the video I pointed to. Is it all abundantly clear? maybe not. Is there room for improvement? We think so.
The search box for "all scales " is in a different place to all the other categories on the browse page. It’s at the bottom of the pane rather than the top like all the the others, and indented - that’s poor UI design. Also, insisting a user selects a category before they see a search box is very unfriendly. Why not just start a new session with “All Scales” as the default category?
The very first thing I wanted to do with S3 was search for a scale and I had to hunt around to do so. In its most basic form Scaler is a chord/scale “dictionary” so searching for a scale should be front and centre.
I searched for “Cm” and got no hits, because it expects a space after the C. In this respect Scaler 2 has a better search than Scaler 3. “Cm” in S2 gives a couple of dozen hits with C Minor third on the list. S3 gives no hits at all, which is slightly ironic because the Circle of Fifths page uses those exact abbreviated forms!
So, simple improvements that could be made:
New sessions start with the “All Scales” category selected in browse page.
Move the search box to the top of that pane next to “clear all filters”.
Improve the search to accept shortened chord names like “Cm”, “F#m” etc. As a starting point it should accept all of the abbreviations shown on the Circle of Fifths.
Yes I agree, we’ve discussed 1 & 3 internally. In 1.0.7 we ensured that a single letter was prioritised for the scale search which has helped.
Scaler 3.1 up[date will include 1 & 3. We are also trying to fit in a tutorial overlay at launch which will help for first time users.
Thanks for the feedback.
