How to change the key in Scaler 3?

This is probably obvious to anyone who has used Scaler before, but I can not see how to change the key of the song from the default C Major. How can I change the key to F Major?

Please and thanks

Hi @benjaminrussell

I find when I Drag up and Down the Semi-tone, this changes the key. Unless there is another way, somebody else might know :slightly_smiling_face:

Also if you record midi or audio into Scaler 3, as with Scale 2, it identifies and displays key and chords.:folded_hands:t6::folded_hands:

Thanks for your suggestion. My problem is when I open an instance of Scaler 3, it comes up with no key. There is nothing in the current Chord Set so changing the semi tone doesn’t work.

I finally experimented and discovered scrolling down through the keys eventually the list goes past key of C variations into other keys. I scrolled down to F Major.

I hope there’s an easier way to just click someplace and have a drop down list of the regular Major and Minor keys to choose a starting point, then have it populate all the variations, or something like that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I suspect I can probably import the chords from my Studio One chord track somehow, but this seems a rather unwieldy way to set an initial key.

For instance, in Studio One, when I start a new song, there’s a place in the dialog box to set key, tempo, etc. and on the main screen there’s a place to change the key by just typing the new key.

I expected to find a place to set the initial key but have not found it yet. Is there such a thing in Scaler 3?

There’s a lot of ways to do this. Here are ones I’ve been using:

  1. On Browse page, if you find a progression you like, you can use that semitone scroller to change click-scroll and change the key.
  2. Also on the Browse Page, in Section A (the top section) if you click “All Scales,” it calls up a keyboard. Press any note on that keyboard, and it will give you a list of all scales in that key. (P. 29 of the User Manual describes this.)
  3. When you’ve selected or created a progression, you can always change keys by using the “semi” control on the upper right of the Browse Page or, on the Arrange Page, the semitone scroll on the left.

Thanks. Your point 2 was very helpful.

Honestly, it all seems more arcane than necessary, but between your suggestions and the others, plus my experimentations, I think I’ll be OK.

I personally would like it better if there were some place to choose a key with a drop down list, right when you start a project, then do all this other stuff to refine and explore.

Cheers

Oh, and when I said “all scales in that key,” I meant to say, all scales and modes built from that root.”

I agree with this…that drop down where it displays the Key seems like a much more intuitive area to change the Key. Right now it does nothing…it’s basically just a display. Either way this thread was helpful.

I agree, too. For those of us with a grounding in theory, it would be a quicker way to get to the right scale.

Oh, I forgot one thing, which I do love about the new setup. When you get to that All Scales menu on the Browse Page, with the small keyboard on it, you can press any note or notes on it, and it will show you all scales/modes containing those notes. Amazing!

Yes, this is correct, and that is exactly how I do, with Semi + or -
