Cannot Get Scaler to sync w Digital Performer

I purchased Scalar today intending that it would be easy to set up and sync to my host Digital Performer on my Mac M4 as I have been professionally recording and using gear like this for almost 40 years. It’s now 6 hours later and I have literally tried everything again and again. Asking questions in google was surprisingly good for trying every option conceivable and we repeated many of them. Still could not get Scalar to sync. The issue I see is that the start/stop button is trying to double as a sync option by right clicking which does not work. It either begins playing on its own or remains in stop mode. I’m surprised there is not a separate sync button or option for this. I have never seen an app attempt to use it’s play button as a sync button as well. The “right click” is not working at all. I have checked every setting again and again under Scalars settings under the “playback” menu changing both “perform mode” and “latch” settings and those didn’t solve the issue either. I know that DP is sending midi beat clocks and Scalar is clearly set to receive them via the ports selection. I have a thread a hundred miles long of everything we have tried with AI suggestions which were quite impressive yet Scalar just will not respond, follow, or sync to DP. I should have waited to purchase and done a “trial” but I just assumed it would be simple like all of the other software I owned and have used and it looks like quite a cool product. Bummed now that I jumped the gun and paid. I also just found out that no phone support is available and trying to go through what I went through tonight via email is another truly frustrating realization. Would be so happy if it is something simple as sometimes happens but there’s too many questions and options to cover doing this via email. Oh well, perhaps the universe will smile on me. Would love to be able to get this going. Thanks for any assistance and happy creating. Jeff :musical_notes:

Hi @Cloud9 And welcome to the community.
Not sure why your right click is not working. Sync works like most other software that can sync with your DAW. It’s similar to NI Machine or EZKeys 2. You can turn Sync off by right clicking the play button or going to settings where you will see a ‘Sync to DAW’ option. You can turn it off there too.
Scaler 3 is a wonderful and powerful program and it’s worth taking the time to get to know it. You can start with the onboard tutorial, Scaler 3 YouTube playlist and of course the manual which is comprehensive.
We have Scaler 3.3. coming out on July 16th which improves the UX in many ways and also features some really cool new features.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the kind welcome and reply. I’ve been successfully syncing audio programs for almost 30 years now and I’m a pretty good researcher, however there is no “sync to DAW” option in my version 3.2.2 for mac which I find very strange. I have also tried adjusting both options in the “perform mode” and “latch” mode settings with no luck.

Having this app attempt to use the start/stop button and double as a “sync” option is not a good idea as it is causing all of these problems. All of the apps I use where sync works all have a separate and independent sync button. I went 6 hours deep into asking AI and I was surprised at how well it responded but nothing we tried has worked so far. Can’t wait to get this up and running. Unfortunately I tried to share the image of my settings screenshot which is completely different from the one you have shared and I was told that I am not allowed to upload a screenshot in here? That certainly throws a wrench in trying to troubleshooting this.

I think this is a simple fix. Try reinstalling and rebooting your machine. Also try launching Scaler 3 in standalone mode and see if you have the same issues. We can narrow it down from there. let us know how you go.

Thanks David, My image clearly shows that in my version 3.2.2 for mac there is no “sync to DAW” option. I went over this with AI troubleshooting and finally it stated that it wasn’t need as the start/stop button doubles as the sync by supposedly right -clicking on it to engage or disengage, It does not work no matter how many times I tried it.

I have tried everything you suggested and also reinstalled scalar at least twice last night. I troubleshooted with AI for 6 hours last night.

I’ve never not been able to solve an issue like this unless there was a bug in the software and I know DP is solid as I’ve been using it for 35 years. I just can’t understand why there isn’t a dedicated sync button for scalar instead of them having the strt/stop button try and also handle sync. I have scalar launched in standalone mode as well and it still won’y sync or follow DP. Thanks again for your time and kindness. I’m sure your team has probably tested scalar with DP although maybe not?

I am willing to pay someone on your team to troubleshoot this in a quick video call if someone is willing to do a video call with me in my video room where I can show both programs on the screen for easy troubleshooting. Eager to get this solved after such a frustrating start.

I can’t help with the DP problem but you can include images in posts. You can drag and drop a file into the text box, you can paste one from the clipboard or you can use the “upload” icon to browse for it.

Thanks Boingy :folded_hands:

I couldn’t find an upload icon. Will have another look.

Here is the upload button (in an uploaded image!)

If it still doesn’t work maybe your image is too large or the file format is not supported. I’ve previously uploaded JPG, PNG and GIF.

Thanks again for your kindness. :folded_hands:

No further responses or assistance from tech support in here. What’s going on?

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the extra information. Before we troubleshoot further, we need to clarify exactly how Scaler 3 is being loaded.

Are you:

  1. Loading Scaler 3 as an instrument plug-in directly inside Digital Performer, or
  2. Opening the standalone Scaler 3 application separately alongside Digital Performer?

If it is loaded inside DP, could you also confirm:

  • Whether the plug-in is called Scaler 3 or Scaler 3 Audio
  • Whether you are loading the AU or VST3 version
  • Whether right-clicking or Control-clicking the main Play button produces any menu at all
  • Whether Settings → Playback contains a Sync to DAW option

Please also post a screenshot showing the full Digital Performer window, including the track or insert where Scaler is loaded, together with Scaler’s Playback settings.

That should help us establish whether this is a Digital Performer-specific issue, the wrong Scaler plug-in being loaded, or something unusual with the installation.

As a separate test, you could also load Scaler 3 as an instrument plug-in in Reaper (download the free trial version) and see whether the right-click menu and Sync to DAW setting appear there.

Hi Davide, thanks for the detailed reply. I truly appreciate your time, and I know that there are more than one thing to consider here.

When we get this figured out, I am willing to create and post a clear step by step instruction for DP installation and use and post it to the group to eliminate others that may be messaging you for a similar issue when setting up the app.

I have tried loading scaler both within DP and as a standalone with the same results, as both a mono as well as a stereo plugin. The 2 AU plugins in my components folder are named Scaler 3 Audio.component and Scaler 3.component and they both show that they passed verification. In my DP tracks window the plugin loaded shows the name of “Scaler 3”.

RT clicking on the play button does not bring up any menu, although hovering the mouse over the play button shows the message to “rt click for DAW sync on/off.

And my settings menu in version 3.2.2 does not show a “sync to DAW” menu option.

Attached is a screenshot of the plugin loaded into a track in DP.

Downloaded Reaper and after 45 minutes of trying to figure out how to use it I see that rt clicking brings up the “DAW sync” option but it still does not do this in DP.

Thanks again for your valuable time, :folded_hands:

Hi Jeff,

Thanks, this is very helpful and has narrowed the issue down considerably.

Your screenshot confirms that you are loading Scaler 3 as an instrument plug-in inside Digital Performer, and the fact that the right-click DAW Sync menu appears in Reaper tells us that the Scaler installation and mouse interaction are working.

The standalone application will not sync directly to a DAW transport, so we can set that test aside.

The remaining question is whether Reaper and Digital Performer are loading the same plug-in format. Could you please confirm:

  1. Your exact Digital Performer version
  2. Your exact macOS version
  3. Whether the Scaler instance in DP is AU or VST3
  4. Whether the working Scaler instance in Reaper is AU or VST3

Could you also please try these two specific tests:

  • Load Scaler 3 VST3 inside Digital Performer and check whether DAW Sync appears.
  • Load Scaler 3 AU inside Reaper and check whether the right-click option still appears.

There is no need to reinstall Scaler again. These tests should tell us whether this is specific to Digital Performer generally or specifically to its handling of the AU version.

The fact that DAW Sync is absent from Settings in DP is not expected, and has not been reported by any other DP users so we need to try and narrow down why this is occurring in your case and have as much info as possible so our devs can explore further.

Thanks again for patiently working through it with us.

Hi Davide,

Thanks for getting back to me with your detailed message.

• So my Digital Performer version is 11.36 (the latest version).
• Current mac OS is Sequoia 15.5
• The Scaler instance in DP is AU
• The working Scaler instance in Reaper appears to be VST3i
• I enabled the Scaler 3 vst in DP and then created a new Scaler track but still no DAW sync option.

• I loaded Scaler 3 AU into Reaper and rt click still does show the option for DAW sync.

Thanks for your assistance and patience with this as well. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET THIS WORKING! :collision:

* Should I make a post asking other DP users what their settings are to have this working?

Thanks Davide :folded_hands:

@Steven After our 3.3 release later this week, can you please download the latest Digital Performer 11.36 Trial version and see if you can replicate the issue @Cloud9 is having. We are awaiting a response from MOTU in the meantime.

Hi Team,

Is this fix to sync to Digital Performer still being pursued? DP is and has been used used heavily by musicians and film composers for decades, and when
we get this figured out, I will share Scaler in my DP forums and I know a lot of people will absolutely be interested in using it.

Jeff

Hi @Cloud9 we’re not able to reproduce this issue with Scaler 3.3 running as a plugin inside Digital Performer. The image below is Scaler 3.3 on an Instrument track inside Digital Performer 11.36 on macOS Sequoia 15.7.7. Right clicking on the play button at the top of the screen reveals the DAW Sync option, which is also available via the Settings menu.

Just to clarify, are you saying that when you run Scaler 3.3 (either VST3 of AU) as a plugin inside of Digital Performer, the DAW Sync option is not available via right click on the play button, or via the Settings menu? But when you run Scaler 3.3 as a plugin inside of Reaper, you do see those sync options?

The only reason I can think that those sync option would not be appearing is if you were running the standalone version of Scaler 3, not the plugin. You can tell if you are running the standalone version of Scaler 3 if there is an ‘Audio/MIDI Settings’ button within the settings menu. There is also a banner at the top of the interface on first launch saying ‘Your audio input has been muted’, plus a Settings button taking you to the Audio/MIDI settings. The standalone version does not sync to any host, and needs its own audio/MIDI configuration.

If possible, can you send me a screenshot or video of the issue e.g. no sync button if this continues to be an issue? You can share a cloud storage link with me via DM if you’d like.

Hi Gents, I finally got Scaler to sync to DP. The entire issue with that appears to be that I couldn’t tell the standalone version from the “in app” one. Once I figured that out, I got it to sync finally.

Now the issue is that I am unable to route Scaler to any of my virtual instruments to get them to track so I can use them.

The Scaler 3 VST3 won’t load the instrument panel in DP on macOS 15.5, even though the vst3 is selected in my plugins folder (with the AU plugin disabled), so it appears to load in my tracks window (minus the name: it only shows as “instrument” unlike when I load the AU version and it shows “Scaler”), but it will not load the actual instrument window. I only tried the vst3 version in an attempt to be able to trigger my virtual synths. No luck.

And the AU version which loads lacks MIDI output routing so I can’t trigger any of my virtuals with that version. So I am still unable to use Scaler for the reason I purchased it in my workflow.

Is this something that can be looked into rather quickly as I know these are known issues from doing hours and hours of research and troubleshooting online. Would love to get this running smoothly. Am willing to hang in there a little longer if you feel this can be solved soon. Thanks for the continued support. :folded_hands:

Ouch - this is the issue we suspected from the outset.

Unfortunately, our team has spent a considerable amount of time investigating Digital Performer based on your repeated assertion that this was a known Scaler issue, when the problem was simply confusion between the standalone application and the plug-in.

We’re a small, dedicated team supporting a very large user base, and extended one-to-one troubleshooting like this pulls resources away from genuine product issues affecting other users.

You’re welcome to ask further questions here and hopefully the community can assist. There is also a wealth of searchable information on this forum and within the DP community. However, before escalating an issue, please work through the available documentation and avoid broad claims such as “these are known issues” unless that has actually been established.

Given the amount of support already provided here, our team won’t be able to continue offering individual troubleshooting on this matter.
