Audio Detection & Using Logic’s Built-in Synths with Scaler 3

I’ve Watched tutorials about audio detection and mine simply doesn’t work with logic. I don’t understand why it simply isn’t drag n drop. Scaler also refuses to scan my logic synths. Any help is much appreciated.

Create a track and insert scaler as an instrument. On the top right hand side of the scaler plugin is a small box marked side chain. Click in that box and select the audio source you want scaler to listen to. Ensure that the capture icon is set to audio. Press the red coloured record icon followed by play via Logic Pro. Once Logic has played the audio you wish to capture, stop playback and stop the capture within the scaler plugin. Scaler should show the chords captured just below the capture section. Some of the notes captured won’t be correct and you’ll need to find the chords you want via the various menus within scaler. Hope this works for you.

where are you seeing this “small box marked side chain”?

Hi @Chozenfew, welcome to the forum and thanks for your post.

Firstly, drag-and-drop support for MIDI and audio files is coming in Scaler 3.1, expected for release on May 14, 2025. You can read more here. The User Guide will also have expanded descriptions of Audio / MIDI Detect and Capture in the 3.1 update.

In the meantime, here are a few ways to use audio detection with Scaler 3 in Logic:

The simplest method is to insert the Scaler Audio 3 (Audio FX) plugin directly onto an audio track.

To use real-time audio detection:

  1. With the Detection popup open and Detect Audio selected, click the Record button. The button will flash, indicating that Scaler 3 is actively monitoring incoming audio data.
  2. Start playback from the desired point in your DAW’s timeline, or perform live audio through an instrument such as a guitar routed into the track.
  3. As the audio plays, Scaler 3 will analyse the content and display the detected chords in Section A, with corresponding scale suggestions in Section B.
  4. When you’re finished, click the Record button again to stop detection. The results will remain visible for further interaction, such as binding or editing.

Tip - in Logic, turn on Input Monitoring on the track (the “I” button") to hear sound from the Scaler 3 Audio version.

To use Detect Audio via file import:

  1. With the Detection popup open and Detect Audio selected, click the Folder button.
  2. A file dialog will appear. Navigate to and select an audio file from your computer.
  3. Double-click the file or click Open to import it into Scaler 3.
  4. Scaler 3 will automatically analyse the file and display the detected chords in Section A, with corresponding scale suggestions shown in Section B.

Alternatively, as whippet pointed out, you can also route audio into the Scaler 3 (Virtual Instrument) plugin using sidechain input.

Regarding Logic’s built-in synths:
Scaler 3 can host standard AU or VST plugins, but Logic’s instruments and effects (like Alchemy for example) use a proprietary format that only Logic can load. It’s the same case with Ableton devices like Operator and Wavetable — they aren’t accessible as standard plugins outside of their respective DAWs.

To use Logic’s built-in synths, route MIDI from Scaler 3 to another channel in Logic that’s hosting those instruments.

Hope that helps.
