Scaler2 MIDI IN for external instruments tracks (in Live 11) are missing, for Scaler 2.8.x AU on Intel MacOS 11.6.8

for Scaler 2.6.x VST i have no issue routing to external instrument tracks.
However, realizing i should be running the AU plugin on my intel Mac, I was surprise that a Scaler 2.8.x once inserted into a track, the assocated external instrument tracks NO LONGER can route from Scaler in both of the MIDI In fields, only the upper field. in the lower MIDI IN field, the pulldown menu only lists prefx and postfx, and “Scaler 2” is GONE so you cant get those tracks to input scaler’s MIDI
I have screenshots but hopefully the description above suffices.

and the reason for doing so would be no doubt much lower CPU cycles load for AU than for VST Scaler2 plugin (right?) I’m having some CPU load issues so I suspected the VST scaler… but i can’t wire up the AU to replace it

This is a limitation in the AU spec. It doesn’t allow for this. Until Apple corrects or adds it then Scaler can’t use it correctly. This is no fault of Scaler.

Please do try and find a workaround. This is a major disappointment.

Is there some other way to catch scaler2’s AU output translated MIDI notes (so we could then in turn route to an external soft instrument track or rack)? Even if it is a circuitous method, even by exploiting some M4L device or some other MIDI effects rack trick, i.e. something entirely different than how that’s done in the VST with Ableton Live’s track input configuration it would be awesome to use AU with external soft instruments.

Is there no back door to scaler 2.8 AU MIDI output? Somehow? All we can ever get with scaler2 AU is use of scaler’s internal soft instruments?

We have no emotional investment or care about “fault”. That’s not relevant. Especially with such an outstanding product as Scaler!!!

Software vendors over the decades have had to make significant changes repeatedly (!) to keep up with apples unpredictable changes in their API. Most and all of the leading developers have managed to keep up with Apple. With such an outstanding Scaler team, surely there is a way for Scaler to do an AU supporting external soft instruments at least, and hopefully host and MIDI automation too!?

Have you requested the needed changes directly to Apple? If not, why not? If so, what was the result?

Apple is well aware of this. It has been discussed since the use of MIDI in VST plugins started happening. This is in the AU spec and Apple is the only one that can change it. I’ve used both VST2 and VST3. Version 3 is much more CPU friendly although Live 11 has some serious CPU problems on the mac that is unrelated to Scaler 2.
The basic thing is that AU does not allow MIDI to be transmitted through it so there is no way around that.
I am hoping that AU3 will fix this. In the mean time VST3 which I use under Catalina in Live 11 on Mac works well. I’ve had 5 Scalers running with no issues.
Sorry this isn’t something that would be easy to do but log in on the Apple forums and put more voices there. They need to fix this.
Take care.
