Fun with Scaler 3 and Ableton Live's new Expressive Chords feature

It’s super easy to populate the Expressive Chords grid (available in Live 12.2, beta at present) with chords from Scaler 3.

  1. Create a chord progression (up to 64 chords long) in Scaler 3 (assuming all chords are 1 bar in length by default).
  2. Drag the midi into a cell in Live’s session view.
  3. Go to clip view and divide the note length in half, twice (using the “/2” button). All chords are now 1/4 note in length,
  4. Put the Expressive Chords effect on a track and expand the view using the triangle.
  5. With the cell with the chords highlighted, press the import button in Expressive Chords.
  6. Voilà! A new Expressive Chords set. Press the save icon to save it for future use.

Expressive chords is a lot of fun, and benefits greatly from Scaler 3 to build custom sets.

Cheers from Oz…
