Hello, I couldn’t find a usable workflow to do the following :
Let’s say we are in Dminor. My melody is playing the note Bb. I know Bb is in VI chord and the iv chord. But I am looking for other diatonic creative choices within the scale of Dm to harmonize my Bb in the melody.
How would you use scaler to find those chords ?
I started creating a google sheet with all possible diatonic harmonization for the 7 notes of the minor scale. But I thought maybe scaler could be a faster way to do this ?
Hi @walimaga. It is an interesting question and there have been similar requests in the past. I struggle to think of a direct strategy to do this in Scaler 2, however it would be a useful area for Scaler to potentially explore in the future.
For the time being, there are some slightly indirect paths you may like to try in Scaler 2 if you haven’t already. For example:
With the D minor scale selected, right click on either the IV or VI chords and click detect, then explore the diatonic chords of other related scales to find other compatible chords.
On the Chord page, use the circle of fifths to explore scales/chords in close proximity to Bb/Gm, and use the chords that appear to the right to find alternatives/variations.
Use the Neo-Riemannian modulation page to find transformations of the IV and VI chords.
Plus there are some other slightly more adventurous paths like using the Mediants modulation page with the IV and VI chords. Perhaps others here can suggest some other potential strategies?
Hey, thanks for responding. Let’s hope It comes at some point in future versions!
Choosing the right chord for a given melody note is so important yet underlooked by many softwares today
here are some screenshot of the google sheet I started to build. If I can do a giant database, I would love to find a way to turn it into a small software. it would detect your live playing, and suggest let’s say 10 chords depending on the note you are holding on the melody. You could even add filters to only display triad suggestion, or 7th, or even chords where the melody note is the fifth… so many possibilities
Being yourself a software developper, how hard it is to create something like this from scratch, given that the giant database is already done. I’m thinking about paying an independant dev to do it why not
