I’ve got a really strong ear for music - I can hear full progressions and melodies in my head - but I have zero music theory background and don’t play any instruments. I bought Scaler hoping it would help me translate those ideas into something playable and structured, but I’m struggling.
I can usually click around and find a couple of chords that match what I’m hearing to start off a progression. But after that, when I try to find the next chord I can hear in my head, I just can’t. For example, I might start with F##min (vi) and D#maj7 (IV7) - I can sing the next chord that fits between them, but no matter how many I try (and I’ve clicked through 50+), I can’t find it. Am I missing something here?
Would really appreciate if someone could explain what I’m doing wrong or how to bridge this gap between what I hear and what I can find. I’ve got so many ideas, but I feel like a caged animal right now!
The online tutorials don’t actually show me how to find a chord that is in my head. Is it possible Scaler isn’t the right tool for me? If I can hear the chord in my head is there a different way to do it.
Well if no one else is going to say it, I will. Take some courses and take learn an instrument (Piano IMHO). You should be easily to see the transition after that. Just my 2 cents, but I think its what you need.
The key of Bb Major has G (equivalent to F##) as its vi chord, but it has Eb as its IV chord, not D# . But, again an enharmonic equivalent to Eb, so the key is most likely B-flat Major. The progression vi - IV - should resolve nicely to the I (A# or Bb Maj – now you got me mixed up with the enharmonic equivalents). Is that what you are hearing? Just go to the second page of Scaler 2 and type these chords in so you can hear them. Hope I didn’t mess this all up?
That’s where Suggest Mode comes in. I find it very good and finding the chord that is in your head. To make it effective you should have a few chords in the Section C which it sounds like you do, then hit suggest. See this Suggest Mode tutorial:
Controlz, does your ear tell you that your chord sequence is the Key of Bb major? If yes, then with the next chord do you want to resolve the iv-IV or are you going somewhere else? Is the next chord elusive because of its voiceing - That is you want voice leading to drive a specific bass note such as a slash chord? How did my suggestion for a Bb Major work? Did you hear resolution?
