Hi. I’m using Scaler 3 in Ableton 12 on Windows 11. Typically my workflow with Scaler 2 would be to have multiple tracks (Bass, Lead etc) each with an instance of Scaler and synchronized so they have the same chords sets. I then use ‘Keys Lock’ to play notes from the chords.
I’m not seeing a Sync option in Preferences. Is this correct? If you don’t want use the inbuilt mixer how do you drive separate instruments?
I generally only run a single instance of Scaler 2 in Ableton. I have a template set up where all the MIDI tracks I might want to use Scaler for are set up to receive MIDI from Scaler, but all set to “Off”. When I load it up, I set the track I want to use to “In” so it starts receiving MIDI, do what I want to do with it in Scaler (using the individual progression editing area at the bottom instead of editing global parameters), then drag and drop the MIDI from Scaler to the track. Then I turn off the input for that track so it plays the MIDI I just dragged over, and set the next track I want to work with to “In”. If you need more than 8 “progressions” you’ll need to make a new instance, but it’s still more manageable than an instance for each track. I’m just waking up but I’m really looking forward to loading up 3 in a bit, from the previews it seems like the new Arrangement view is going to pair really well with the way I do things.
I can’t figure this out either. The workflow was pretty seamless before using the multple instances of Scaler 2 and using the sync.
I have tried every possible setup with the midi routing in the arrange page and can’t get anything to route in a workable way. This is the only function that looks like it can send signals to other places in Scaler 3.
I have asked if there are any routing guides for Ableton but have not had a response as yet.
Yes, I agree that removing the sync feature is a shame
I started using always one, but the synced multiple option is amazing for auditing, and I don’t like the embedded mixer as well, even if maybe I didn’t test it enough
Thanks for sharing. That’s definitely not the way I work. I don’t want to drag and drop MIDI as that just creates clips that need to be coordinated. What if you want to change your progression? Exporting out again is a massive pain. The sync options in Scaler 2 allowed you to have many tracks simultaneously following a main instance.
Yes, currently for me I can’t use V3. A bit disappointed as the pre-release videos said that you could use version 3 in the same way as 2 but that is not currently the case.
100% I’m in the same boat & feel it is unusable in Ableton for how I have always worked. It almost feels like using the standalone program and Ableton just happens to also be loaded.
I could use a VST Piano and a VST reverb inside Scaler 3 but I don’t want to. I wan’t to use an ableton stock piano and a stock reverb just like I could before. The only option now is to keep dragging and dropping midi from Scaler 3 into my project. Like you say if you wan’t to tweak something later you can’t easily do that.
One of Scaler’s main competitors had this issue with limited routing in Ableton and that is specifically why I chose Scaler 2.
Such a shame, had been anticipating the new release.
I’d even managed to find a way to halve my track count by having Scaler 2 on the same instrument track instead of having to route it out. I thought I’d be able to just replace Scaler 2 instances with Scaler 3 but sadly not. Hopefully the Mods will give us some insight and an update in due course.
I realize that everyone “had” a specific v2 workflow prior to v3 - with full blown multitrack capabilities - AND the ability to host VSTs right inside this thing - the clunky “v2” concept of syncing instances does not make a lot of sense (to me anyways) and seems instantly deprecated.
Here is another reason why the embedded mixer is not good for all
currently at least
I cannot drive the 2 keyboards of my Hammond because the mixer send its output to the channel 1 ONLY, skipping the channel I select in each Scaler track (1 and 2 clearly) so only the upper keyboard can receive chords
So, at the moment I must use multiple instances for other accompaniment tools, but without the sync option; and I cannot use the keys-lock feature
(if it will ever work, and it seems not working now)
It means that I will use another tool as a solo helper
Main Track sync will make its way back in. Obviously you have the ability to Multichannel MIDI out which negates the requirement for Sync so it didn’t make the cut for launch but will.
You can just save the Preset and open it in another Scaler 3. It’s actually quite flexible.
Ableton is the only DAW that doesn’t support Multi-channel MIDI Out. I am feeling that may change in the future. Certainly lodge that feature request with Ableton.
Thanks Davide. Do you have a time frame for re-introducing sync? It appears for myself and others on here that we are just unable to use version 3 without this. (I’m not so confident on multi-out appearing in Ableton, it’s been requested for years)
I’ve considered the option of using presets to manage multiple instances but there is a huge difference between pushing sync from one main Scaler (or using Follow) than saving a preset, reopening what could be many tracks individually and loading a preset every time you make a change.
There are many reasons that Scaler needs to operate as before, where it exists as sitting within a chain of effects, racks etc within the DAW and not within the mixer in Scaler, automation would be one big reason. Thanks
