MIDI OUT Issues with Mac IAC Driver

It appears that midi out is having an issue on my Intel Mac due to the IAC Driver. I have tried routing Scalers midi out to multiple soft synths (Moog, Analog Lab, etc.) and Korg Gadget with hanging notes and a mixed signal which makes it unusable.

I use another app, ChordPolyPad, which allows you to use its own output and the destination app will detect it for the input of midi without the need of the IAC Driver, kind of like when a midi controller is added. When I use ChordPolyPad with the IAC Driver I get the same results as Scaler. So, it appears to be an issue with the IAC Driver.

I have as well Problems with the IAC Driver as Bus. Scaler 3.2 Standalone. As soon as I activate this bus as output latest after 3 chords the displaying of chords in the transports stops and only showing the last chord. Clicking in the little i right of the chords name brings back the count changing back to the chord name and then again hanging

With DAW as rooting this happens not.

testing it with ReasonStudio 13 the sending of midi stops and after a count of 3 to 4 chords it comes back again and after 3 or 4 chords later it stops again. no midi sending.

Sometimes a warning comes that the IAC driver can’t handle the amount of midi notes. and the Mac is too slow. It is a MacBook Pro M3 max 32Gb RAM. Tahoe 26.1 (25B78)

This problem are nit valid with Sundog midi Studio from feel your Sound

Really a Problem with the IAC driver in Standalone. Just a Progression

Play: With daw as rooting option all fine.

selecting IAC-Driver

each chord clicked with mouse first round all good bad then second first chord a kind of vacuum cleaner noise appears and all following chords get added to one “kakophonie” all notes from the chord and the background noise

Here a movie with sound

Any news? Still exists after a new setup of the IAC Bus

Hi folks. Apologies it’s difficult to tell if there are several different issues being reported here, or if they are all related.

@northernsummit, first of all welcome to the forum. Are you running Scaler 3 standalone? You mention you are routing Scaler’s MIDI output to multiple soft synths. Why are you using the IAC bus for this? You should be able to simply host those software synths inside of Scaler without needing any external MIDI routing?

@vondersulzburg

I’m not sure I follow you here. We have found that changing a track’s MIDI output device whilst Scaler is playing can be problematic as note off messages are not send to inactive devices. Does this sound like what you are experiencing?

Also when running Scaler 3 standalone, what is your audio buffer size set to? A too lower setting can result in the types of behaviour you are describing.

Hi @Tristan

Some more description from my side.

In Scaler I can choose DAW or IAC bus in my setup as midi output device. As long as I use DAW every thing is fine.

As soon as I choose IAC the problems exist. Only Scaler stand alone is started.

This are the settings:

By looking at this settings I got the idea that it could have to do something with setting the active midi input to the IAC driver.

Unticking this and NOW IT IS WORKING. Seems there is any influence when having this active. As soon as I activate the Input there seems to be a feedback loop back to Scaler.

By the way I really would like to see the this additional information

and a function to set all midi output divides for all tracks as once including a auto numbering of the channels or a list view to set them without opening each track.

Hi @vondersulzburg thanks for the extra info. Yes this makes sense now. You have the IAC bus set as both your MIDI input and output device creating a feedback loop. Perhaps this can be addressed with some kind of safety measure in a future update to prevent this from occurring.

Glad to hear things are working again, and thank you again for the report.

So you are saying you would like to see MIDI output information on the track header itself? We can certainly take this onboard as a feature request, however space is very limited there already.

Hi @Tristan,

I was only testing Scaler 3 standalone with the soft synths. My main objective was to use Scaler into Korg Gadget since they don’t allow any plugins.

@vondersulzburg, good work on figuring out the feedback issue by turning off the midi input!

Hallo Tristan

Yes space is limited quite a lot but maybe with a dropdown only for the channel.

and in addition in settings as default: DAW or another Bus.

as a selctionfield or a drop down.

Should I create a feature request?

Michael

Thanks Michael. Yes if you would find that useful I suggest creating a feature request post in that section of the forum. All feedback and suggestions there are greatly appreciated. Cheers.
