Live playing setup guidance

Hi, I’ve used scaler over the years for production, but I’m working on a live setup for triggering pads and I wanted to know if there was a way to do the following easily:

Assigning pads
I would like to assign the pads on my midi keyboard to specific chords or notes within scaler. Is there a way to simply use midi learn and tap the pads to assign it to the chords in scaler 2?

Single notes
In some cases I need single notes and not entire chords. Is there an easy way to just play the note needed? The detection options do not detect single notes, so I have to manually find the note in the chord set.

I’m looking for easy workflows in setting up this live rig as I’m also looking for a way to quickly iterate on ideas / inspiration.

Thank you

Hi @rrahim

Re Assigning pads to specific keys on a keyboard is callled binding. This is addressed in the tutorial Using Midi Clips to Control Scaler.

Re Single notes, can you clarify if you are having this issue with Audio or Midi detection, please? In my experience the detection does detect single notes. To test this you might try detecting a piece of music that consists of a single melody line.

Hope this helps

Maybe I did something wrong. But this is what I’ve done:

If I right click the chord pad, it has a detect option.
Playing a note on the Midi Keyboard does not change the chord to the played note.

I think I’ll make a video to explain what I’m after though.

So what I would like to do is bind a specific key, to a specific pad (chord).
Not for it to be locked to a specific block of notes.

In addition, it would be great to just hit learn, and play the note it should be binded to.

What I’m also looking for is the ability to simply play the chord, and bind it to the pad.
But then have all the scaler features that suggest chords etc. around the newly played and stored chord.

I believe there’s a workflow opportunity here that Scaler is missing out on.

@davide do you think there’s something in the new Scaler 3 which can address this workflow?

Yes! You can use MIDI Mapping in Scaler 2 to assign pads to specific chords. For single notes, try custom key bindings. Should work well for your live setup!
