How do I work effectively with multiple time signatures with Scaler 3 hosted in a DAW? I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere. My DAW of choice is REAPER. Here are the steps I’ve followed:
- Open REAPER
- Insert time signature marker at 1.1 to set time signature to 7/4
- Insert time signature marker at 5.1 to set time signature to 4/4
- Insert new track
- Click “FX” on new track and add instance of “VST3i: Scaler 3 (Scaler Music)”
- Click “C Major scale”
- Select all seven diatonic chords
- Right-click and click “Add to Main Track”
- Go to Arrange view
- Change division resolution to “1/4”
- Adjust first four chords so that they fill the first four bars (by extending them all to seven beats each)
- Move the remaining three chords so that they butt up to each other ()
- In REAPER transport, click “Go to start of project” button and then the play button to start playback
The good news is that the chord progression plays back properly: four bars of 7/4 followed by three bars of 4/4 with a single chord per bar. The bad news is that when clicking around the timeline in Scaler 3 itself, the time signature is not updated when clicking into a region of the arrangement that is marked in a different time signature in REAPER’s timeline.
I suspect that this is a limitation of VST3 plugins. Is there any way to make this kind of workflow work as expected? If not, what are workarounds that others have used to work on songs with multiple time signatures?
Update: If this is a limitation of VST plugin hosting, then maybe this can become a feature request: adding the ability to add time signature changes in the Scaler 3 timeline to supplement those in the host DAW.
