A Tune in Honor of Davide & the Team: "Dream Up a Song! (The Scaler Theme)"

I decided the best way to test Scaler and develop a workflow was to write a song. So I wrote a song to celebrate Scaler - and Davide, Tristan, Steven, and the whole gang that invented this miraculous machine!

I call it, “Dream Up a Song (The Scaler Theme)”. It’s linked below.

A few front-notes:

First, OMG, Scaler 3 is AMAZING! Without question, it reduces workflow time by 75% and increases creative opportunity immeasurably. It’s a joy to work with. It’s a creativity-unleashing beast!

Second, I’m old fashioned. I love 1920s-1960s pop standards - the so-called “Great American Songbook” of the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, et al. This is written unabashedly in that style. Lyrics are in the first comment.

Third, everything in this tune is synthesized. The vocals are Synth V (the voicebank is “Kevin”). Other instruments include NI Kontakt’s Rickenbacker bass, The Giant piano, and Session Brass; East West Hollywood Voices; and EZ Keys II on the piano. They all worked incredibly well. (The combo of Scaler 3 and EZ Keys, as Davide suggested a few weeks ago, is absolutely killer.)

I will post my workflow in a comment below when I finish drafting it.

Here’s the lyrics to “Dream Up a Song (The Scaler Theme)”:

Introduction

When I wake from a restless night
Haunted by visions I can’t recall
I’ll lay in bed, replaying
What my edgy mind is saying…

A honking horn, a robin’s tweet,
Overheard words drifting in from the street
All infuse my reverie

They help me turn my rapture
Into something I can capture
In a lovely, living mel-o-dy…

Verse

Scale the heights!
And see the sights
You only find in your dreams
Make the rounds,
And hear the sounds
The elements of fantasy
Can become a symphony

Have you heard
The way a third
Turns your figments into a theme?
A second’s tensions
Add new dimensions
Toss in words like “June” and “moon”
And soon the whole world’s singing your tune.

Bridge

I dreamed I took the A train out to Sixth Street
There’s a place for us on the seventh floor
On the fourth floor is a space
For our friend, Amazing Grace
My fav’rite fifth of scotch is in her drawer.

Verse

There’s few things finer
Than a somber minor
Flowing a dominant stream
From Dorian gray to a Lydian ray
It bursts inside your window
In a massive, swelling, great crescendo

Let me finish
But not diminish
This learning that seems so extreme:
Chords and scales
Tell wondrous tales
In your nap you’re mixing salad
Then you wake up with a ballad
Or you’re leading an armada
Which inspires a grand cantata
Weaving notes just like a tailor
On the loom that’s known as Scaler -
Music’s in your dreams.
