Serum 2 VST3 not showing up in Scaler 3 in Windows 11

Good day. I have done multiple rescans of my plugins but it is not showing Serum 2 in the plugins list. It shows the original Serum but it is odd than Serum 2 is not showing. From what I can see, it seems like all plugins installed into a subfolder ending in .vst3 are not included in the plugins (this is how the plugins are installed by the installers), e.g.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Serum.vst3\Contents\x86_64-win
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Parallel Aggressor.vst3\Contents\x86_64-win\

Can you please ensure that Scaler 3 can find VST3’s installed to .vst3 subfolders of the main VST3 directory, i.e. C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\*.vst3

I can confirm Serum v2 doesn’t show up in Scaler3 (Win10).

Don’t think though it has necessarily to do with the mentioned thing with “xxxx.vst3” naming of subfolders. PluginBuddy for example uses a subfolder called “Plugin Buddy.vst3”, and that’s working in Scaler.

Regarding Serum I’d suspect more that the reason might be that it’s also an effect plugin.
On the other hand, no idea 'bout the “Parallel Aggressor” :person_shrugging:

There’s quite a few bugs when using plugins in Scaler3, so…

Thanks, Aelyn. I just did a basic check of a few of my plugins installed in .vst3 subfolders and these were all missing, so I assumed that this was the issue. Hopefully the Scaler team can find a solution.

lol after mentioning PluginBuddy, that’s even a workaround. Load PluginBuddy (it’s freeware) into Scaler, and load Serum2 from within PluginBuddy.

(was just quickly testing, ain’t sure if everything’s working correctly, but seemed so)

Cool - thanks, Aelyn. I have Plugin Buddy installed, so will check if it is showing in Scaler 3. Have you tried Unify by PluginGuru yet - I highly recommend it.

We are looking into why Serum 2 VST3 is not showing up on windows. AU works fine. Although I do note many users online having issues with Serum 2 VST3 not showing up in their DAW:

Personally I’m not having issues with Serum2 (other than in Scaler3), hence I didn’t really bother with things like in the linked thread, but I’m aware of it since Serum2 was released.

I think it’s more of an issue introduced by Xfer themselves. Most Synths that also serve as an FX plugin are actually doing this by providing a separate plugin file, often “SynthBlablaFX.vst3/dll”.
For whatever reason Xfer chose to do it differently and merged Synth and FX plugin into one file.

My guess is that some hosts (incl Scaler3) can’t really deal with that. Like they can’t properly identify/categorize/differentiate what it is.

Scaler3 apparently can’t identify Serum2 as an instrument, BUT it shows up as an FX:

BUT another BUT lol:
trying to use Serum2 FX in the Scaler3 standalone is crashing Scaler. It’s only working when using Scaler3 as a plugin in a host.

@davide FYI

Following statement by Xfer regarding this:

  • Packaging Instrument & FX in a single bundle is a core feature of VST3. Hosts that have issues are by definition not VST3 compliant and need to up their game.
  • Ensures you cannot have mismatched Instrument and FX versions installed, which could otherwise cause bugs.
  • Reduces installer size & installed size.
  • Reduces memory usage when using Instrument & FX at the same time.
  • Allows the “Link Parameter” functionality to work between Instrument & FX.

@davide Serum 2 VTS3 is working fine for me in Windows 10 with Scaler 3 1.0.5

Let me know if you would like me to post anything that might help you track down the issue that others are having.

lol more oddities, here only Serum v1 is existing, in both Scaler3 standalone and Scaler3 plugin

Do you have Serum2 available as an FX plugin as well?

Yes, both Serum 2FX and SerumFX are available (and OTT for that matter :).

Thanks for the info. Well, that’s under “Effects”, I’m having that here as well.

But it’s about Serum2 not showing up as an instrument (aka under “Sounds”).

Yes, that’s all okay here. Strange

Is Serum 2 in your plugins64.ignore file in?

C:\ProgramData\Scaler Music\Scaler 3

Thank you, yea strange indeed

Sorry but I was starting to doubt you really got both, Synth and FX versions available… :grimacing:

Won’t have time until Saturday/Sunday to have a closer look, but now that I know there’s somebody who got it working I might try to fix it. Didn’t make sense trying before, thought it’s just a given fact.

The plugins64.ignore file is entirely empty:

Okay, good luck!

Incidentally, I assume you are using the latest version of Scaler 3, that’s 1.0.5?
Version 3.00 only found Waves VST3 plugins for me and nothing else.

Yes, I forgot to mention it’s v1.0.5 of Scaler3.

Still might try with a clean re-install (again…) first.
Though I’m suspecting it might be some sort of dependencies problem, so I’ll check the installed vcredist packs, if necessary updating them and see if it has an effect.

Something like that, no definite plan yet, have to look first what might make sense trying.

Hi Guys. I noticed that when I removed those highlighted files C:\ProgramData\Scaler Music\Scaler 3 (here is picture under text) and reinstalled Scaler 3 and scanning vst2 and vst3 plugins again. It’s take for a while if you have lot of plugins. After that I restarted Computer. When I open Scaler 3 in my DAW Cubase 14.0.20 Pro. I have Serum 2 in Scaler 3 instruments.

I confirm the same issue exists on Mac.
I have my vst3 in the default folder on Mac, and Serum 2 is not found by Scaler 3.
