Scaler 3 plugin high dpi scaling

Hello,

I’ve been waiting since the first version of scaler 3 for a proper management of the display of my vst3 plugin on a 4k screen. This last version didn’t fix this long existing bug which I consider as a major one.

Once a vst is loaded on Scaler (Pigments, Massive and Kontakt8, etc.), when I clic to dispaly its interface, it opens up either with an enormous interface which overflows my screen either with a very tiny gui unreadable. In both cases their gui are not usable at all.

All my other daws handle this high dpi scaling graciously

I asked the support for a fix of this issue, the answer was maybe in a future version.

For me, Scaler is totally unusable with plugin from the beginning. I would prefer Scaler team to fix this major bug before developping other fancy feature.

Thanks

Just tested this in Studio Pro v8.1.1 - and a shiny new Samsung M7 (43 inch) monitor - with Windows 10 set to 4k resolution (3840x2160 @ 175% scaling) , Studio Pro withj it’s HiDPI checkbox on - and Scaler 3.3 opens perfectly.

You did not say what DAW you are using or what OS - so your issue is hard to troubleshoot.

AND - v3.3 has perfect resizing in the right hand corner of the UI - drag it to whatever size you need.

Hello,

This problem occurs with the stand alone version of Scaler. When I open up scaler as a plugin in a DAW all my VST3 plugins inside Scaler opens correctly.

I am on windows 11, with a 3840 X 2400 screen definition @ 250% scaling. No problem with other DAW like Bitwig, Reason, Musescore, even DaVinci Resolve. They all manage the correct scaling of my plugin.

Have no issues with standalone either.

But now that I read your post over again - I see I glossed over some key data -

"Once a VST is loaded on Scaler (Pigments, Massive and Kontakt8, etc.), when I click to display its interface, it opens up either with an enormous interface which overflows my screen either with a very tiny gui unreadable. In both cases their gui are not usable at all"

This is a different scenario - and it may be one where there is nothing that Scaler can do. Do remember that while Scaler itself is HiDPI aware - ANY VST that you host inside it - may not be - especially something like Massive etc. AND any of thousands of Kontak libraries made well before any concept of 4K resolution.

Example - Scaler will not be able to influence Massive to scale correctly - because Massive is old school and is not HiDPI aware.. Pigments on the other hand should scale fine as should Kontakt 8 - as long as whatever library you are loading in it - is HiDPI aware.

There is more to this - I will try a few different targets here in standalone and see what happens.

I have a couple of small monitors, so no problem at the moment, but who knows in the future?
It is always interesting to know certain possible issues in advance, instead of understanding the problem after having changed pieces of software or hardware

I also have this issue working in Stand Alone mode. I’m on a 4k monitor set at 175% scaling in Win11. TDLR Solution: Lower your monitor’s screen resolution temporarily, change the VST’s scaling size in it’s menu, move the VST window to the center of your screen, change your monitor’s resolution back to how you like it. The VST will then open at that middle-screen location when you use the track preview button again or to wherever you placed it on the screen last.

The issue doesn’t happen to all plugins, but enough to be bothersome - Instruments and audio VST2 and VST3s are affected. When you click on the VST preview window button, after a VST has already been added to the track, Scaler will open a pop-up window of your VST and automatically place it at the top of your monitor’s screen. Since my monitor is scaled 175% (zoomed in), the VST window’s buttons (minimize, expand, close, resize and program menus) are rendered outside the monitor’s viewable area - the VST window is rendered huge and it gets sliced in half across the top of my monitor screen. There’s no way at that point to access the VST edit menus or scale it down because those controls are rendered outside of the viewable area, therefore inaccessible. The only way to close the VST and continue is to force close the window down in the Windows Taskbar. See my work-around solution above.

For the Dev Team: Just change the modal window behavior to render VST preview windows aligned at the Center of the screen as default instead of aligned to the Top. Users can then access the VST Top Bar menu buttons and resize their preview windows properly regardless of whatever dpi or resolution the monitor is set to.
