Cannot import midi files into scaler 3.
Tried converting Ableton clips to midi file (.mid)
Tried drag and drop everywere, including the midi editor in the arrange section.

Is there a way to do this ?
Love the program, but this should be prioritized.
There is already a midi editor.
I’ missing something here ?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Hit the record button, change the profile to MIDI Detect and click the folder icon to load your MIDI file

Hi Davide, thank you.
I know that.
In scaler 2 you could drag a midi file and it would detect it.
In scaler 3 it’s not working, and having even a midi editor this time i would expect seamless workflow with midi.

Let’s hope for updates ?
That kind of workflow with detection is cumbersome if you have a lot of material to process.
Let’s prioritize importing midi next 🙂

4 clicks instead of 1 D&D, and if you have MIDI/AUDIO files in multiple folders/plugins, the process is slowed down more

this is another case where SC3 worsened/slowed down a process that was easy and fast before

One of the many cases, unluckily

I tried this today with a leadsheet from Melodyne extracted from a audifile of a vocal created by SUNO with my own lyrics. The lead sheet is imported to Ableton Live and looks good. Same with Cubase. Drag and drop the midi from the Cubase track to their chord track works good.

In Scacler I get nothing. No chord is detected. None Nada.

@davide
I tried to import it via the Midi Detection as described in the manual and on videos. When I select the midi file nothing happens.

I did some testing on the file you supplied and strangely it was only 3 kilobytes and doesn’t work in several MIDI software I tried including Scaler 2 and Scaler 3. I was able to extrapolate the chords using Logic Pro and then export as a MIDI file which then worked correctly in S2 and S3. So something about your Leadsheet.mid file doesn’t contain enough data to be a fully compatible MIDI file:

**Incomplete Information:**

MIDI files consist of events that instruct an instrument to play certain notes, durations, and other parameters. If a file is too small, it might be missing these essential instructions, resulting in silence or incomplete playback

@davide
MIDI files don’t have to be big and the file “leadsheet.mid” is a correctly formed MIDI file. It’s got the header chunk and one track chunk containing MIDI events and timestamps. (I’ve done more than a bit of MIDI programming in my time…)

It loads fine in Studio One, Cubase, Reason and in various online MIDI file analysers.
For example, [MIDI file analyzer](https://streamdevprojects.com/midi) reports

```auto
Number of notes	78
Notes range	C4-Fs5
Time signature	4/4
Beats per minute	116
Tracks
1. 1	78 notes; C4-Fs5
```

So I think there is a bug in Scaler 3. I’d suggest asking your MIDI dev person to look at that file and also ask them if Scaler 3 can handle Type 0 MIDI files.

I have the same issue and getting extremely irritated by this.

My setup:
Abelton 12.4
Mac M3 Studio
All up to date.

D&D does not work. So I have exported the MIDI to a file, when I load it in following the instructions above to the letter, nothing loads into S3.

Surely this functionality is the most basic need for an app such as this.

Hi @dabuska And welcome to the forum. The MIDI file you supplied 136 Bars (mostly just repeating chords) with lots of non-note information. May I ask where you got this MIDI file from?
Scaler 3 seems to be struggling with all of this info. Even when I shorten the MIDI file and remove sysex Scaler 3 doesn’t like it.
Generally I’ve not seen this behaviour before but would you mind trying any other MIDI file from another source? I think you will see it works fine.

I’m noting some info here for our devs:

- **MIDI type:** Type 0
- **Tracks:** 1
- **Resolution:** 96 PPQ
- **Length:** about **136 bars** in 4/4
- **Note events:** 836 note-ons and 836 note-offs
- **Controller events:** only **24**
- **Pitch bend events:** 2
- **Program change:** 1
- **Meta events:** track name, time signature, end of track

Non-note information and general MIDI-style setup data:

- Volume - CC7
- Pan - CC10
- Expression - CC11
- Reverb - CC91
- Chorus - CC93
- Modulation - CC1
- Sustain - CC64
- Timbre - CC71
- Release - CC72
- Attack - CC73
- Brightness - CC74
- Detune / Celeste - CC94

Hi Davide, thanks for the reply, and welcome!
I’ve tried a few different MIDI files, I’ve also downloaded the mMIDI file in this thread that someone else was using fine, unfortunately the issue persists.
This was a pattern from my Abelton project, I just right clicked and exported the MIDI file from arrangement view. Happy to try one you share thats 100% to try?

Also, separately, I’m becoming a little concerned about the underlying architecture/performance of the app. I’m running one of the most powerful computers currently available, yet Scaler 3 still frequently locks up when performing relatively basic operations in the Arrangement view — especially when selecting large groups of chords at once.

I’d genuinely be happy to help as a test user if that’s useful, because I really do love the app and what the team is trying to build here. The harmonic tools are excellent.

That said, operations like:

- importing MIDI files,

- selecting and resizing multiple chords,

- bulk editing in the arrangement view,

…feel like core workflows that should already be stable and responsive.

Right now, it feels less like CPU limitation and more like the app is struggling internally with state management or UI handling under heavier arrangement operations.

Have you installed the latest version from [scalermusic.com](http://scalermusic.com) and tried a clean install? Performance is quite optimised and Scaler 3 itself isn’t CPU expensive in anyway. You can see me using it here with 200+ bars on an Intel Mac!

Hi Davide,

Thanks for helpingh and sharing this. I am literally pulling my hair out. I’d really appreciate some deeper support with my issues.

As a reminder, I am running an M3 Ultra with 96GB of RAM. I have a v clean computer, only data stored are current projects and music programs/plugins/DAW.

I have clean delete/reinstall lots of times now. And The app is just constantly freezing up. The process of dragging midi patterns in, or loading in from clean MIDI file simply does not wor. It either fails as an operation, or, I get never ending wheel of doom.

I am now trying to detect midio notes from an audio file I’ve imported into Abelton, turned scaler on, and it just froze and I had to restart my computer.

Regretfully if I can get this solved soon, I would like to ask for my money back because I’ve spent probably a day in total troubleshooting these issues and they are simply not resolving. The only reason I have this app is so I can detect midi / audio I am already using and go forth manipulating and adapting with scaler..

Is there any way you can do a 1:1 screenshare with me? I’m conscious I’m spending a LOT of time right now going back and forth and never finding the solutions.. I am concerned this is an app design issue tbh.. Thanks

Hi, I would really appreciate some support with this issue. I’ve done everything asked and suggested and still have the same issues. Is there any way you can do a screenshare, or provide additional help? I’ve spent money and a huge amount of time trying to solve this issue, it would be greatly appreciated if you can provide some 1:1 support? Thanks
